上季西區第八休士頓火箭是41勝41敗，勝率五成，目前湖人開季是5勝4敗，勝率超過五成。湖人上季只打出17勝，創造隊史最差戰績，今年季前所有媒體、專家預測，湖人最多大概只能拿到30勝，最多不會超過33勝。
但所有季前預測和分析，都跟湖人開季實際上的表現有了很大反差，湖人現在進攻不差，防守起伏，但偶有傑作，更重要的是板凳深度和發揮非常得力。ESPN報導，湖人板凳每場可以貢獻48.9分，排名聯盟前五，湖人在下半場依舊打出競爭力和反撲氣焰，板凳能量超級發揮至火關鍵。
ESPN根據開季兩周表現，為湖人驚人表現做出分析，板凳得分火力驚人、10人輪換、進攻發揮水準以上，湖人每場可以攻下107.9分，排名聯盟第六，這一切都是湖人教練華頓（Luke Walton）為湖人帶來的改變。
湖人本季表現有可能超乎預期，比季前最高預測33勝更多，甚至可能接近41勝五成勝率。
